Vol profond d’automne

O Canada! This is for any Canadian or anyone with a Canadian spirit.
Flocks of geese honk in the back and midground while a breeze rustles dry autumn leaves. Occasionally other birds pipe up in the foreground for a moment, but its mostly the geese and wind. Think of it in terms if how geese sound flying overhead during their migrations and you've got the basic idea. There's a great sense if space in this, and its surprisingly peaceful, like a crisp fall day.
One word: Autumn. If you want to feel like you're there, no other track can make it happen like this one.
At times I laugh at myself for buying a track listening to geese honking. I have the Visitor Pass and had the chance to sample it first. So why did i buy it? This track produced a very good sense of depth. If you pay attention to the wind, it becomes deep and relaxing. There are many geese honking at various places. Ironically, despite the noise, there are times when it felt like the most quiet track. Well, partially that is. You could pay attention to the small honks from far far away, and it helps you to image the quietness and depth of this track. This is the part that I like. But not until the nearby geese starts to honk in big numbers again and disrupt it. I did not expect it to be so noisy on certain parts. But then again, what should I expect? I feel like i'm part of the national geographic crew/cameraman doing a documentary film on geese. This track puts you in as a listener and observer.
Yes, it's geese. But the Naturespace description doesn't quite tell the whole story. Let me preface this review by revealing that this was the absolute last track that I purchased. Geese? Honking? Do I really want to listen to THAT?! Well the answer was, NO--I don't. But what's a collection with just one piece missing? So the only thing I can add to the description of the track is to emphasize that there is wind blowing. I guess I didn't catch that in their description, but it's there. I couldn't get past the fact that its honking geese! My impressions. Not only was I wrong for thinking I would find this track annoying (I was visualizing "Avian Dawn", only with all honking geese!), but it immediately became my other favorite track from this category the very first time I listened to it. Why? The wind. It's not just wind blowing--there's actually a lot of wind blowing in quite a few Naturespace tracks. In fact, there's a whole category called 'Wind'. It's the nature of the blowing wind in this track that makes it so lush and wonderful to listen to. Unlike the previously reviewed track ("Morning Pathwalk"), this is the other type of track that takes you on a journey as it plays out. Yes, there are geese, and yes, they do quite a bit of honking. But the honking is not steady, continuous and stagnant, like some of the bird calls on other tracks. No, these geese really move around! At times their calls are heard in the middle ground and are actually soft and resonant. Other times they sound as if they calling loudly in a group--but at a considerable distance. A flock lands and slowly approaches where you are sitting. A lone goose gets fairly close and honks, but then he stops and goes about his business before he overstays his welcome. Besides, right around that time the wind starts kicking up. Up until now it's been a gentle breeze blowing, but now the wind really begins to gust. You hear incredibly detailed articulation in the sound of these wind gusts as they build and become stronger and longer. The trees are leafy, and the wind rattles through them and gently whistles with much dimension. When the gusts get strong the geese are very quiet or absent completely from the track. It gets quiet...then another flock slowly moves in but is surrounded by the blowing wind until it calms again. My impressions. Although it may be in the same category as the noisy "Avian Dawn", it is definitely in another league. Yes, the geese honk, yet somehow manage to be soothing among all those strong gusts of wind. There is great pacing in this track as it builds and then calms and builds again. It feels like a much longer track than it probably actually is. This is one of the most lifelike sounding tracks in the collection, full of atmosphere. I find it very relaxing in spite of the honking geese. How is that possible? I don't know how that works, it just does! To me, this is another must-have Naturespace track. Love it!
Unfortunately the geese are just too much. Definitely not for headphones.
Geese calling out near and far on a cool autumn afternoon with a light breeze. Strong sense of the sky horizon and varying distances across a wide space.
